5 Less Common and More Concerning Causes of Spotting Before Menstrual Periods

In a recent blog, we shared some of the Most Common Causes for Spotting outside of your regular period. We focused on some of the most common and less concerning causes that show up.  We would be remiss, however, if we failed to mention other pelvic health issues that accompany spotting – and that should be considered for more medical attention.  Here, we list a few more reasons you could be experiencing spotting and why to get it further treated.

Uterine or cervical polyps. It is not uncommon for a woman to have an abnormal pap smear at the occasional OBGYN check-up.  Oftentimes, testing can be done to prove that any abnormal screening was in fact nothing more to be concerned with. However, further testing is always recommended as it could lead to the discovery of polyps. Polyps are small abnormal tissue growths that can occur in a number of places, including the cervix and uterus. Most polyps are benign, or noncancerous. However, they do bring their own side effects. Namely, light bleeding between periods and unusual discharge. Both of which have been taken into consideration when producing a temporary solution for comfort and absorption via our Apele everyday undies. Typically, no treatment is needed unless they’re causing bothersome symptoms and fortunately, if they do need to be removed, the process to do so is generally quick and painless.

Uterine polyps, however,  can only be seen on imaging tests like ultrasounds. They’re most often benign, yet a very small percentage can become cancerous and they most often manifest in women who have completed menopause. Symptoms include irregular menstrual spotting after menopause.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), like chlamydia or gonorrhea, can cause spotting between periods or after intercourse. Another possibility of STIs is vaginal discharge that is green, white, or yellow in color. Apele everyday undies are intentionally designed to capture these secretions and wick moisture away from your sensitive areas. This also allows for you to monitor how much discharge is taking place and report as necessary to your medical professional. Contact your doctor if you suspect an STI as many of them can be treated with minimal complications when discovered early on.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a disease often accompanies by irregular bleeding between periods. This can develop when bacteria spreads from your vagina to your uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries. For this reason, it is very important that women use a daily panty that will help wick away moisture rather than pool bacteria (an issue common in cotton fabrics). Apele’s performance nylon acts as a deterrent against such, helping keep you dry throughout the day. When and if you begin to experience painful sex or urination, pain in the lower or upper abdomen, or increased or foul-smelling vaginal discharge, you’ll want to see your physician as they could help successfully treat it. What’s interesting and unique to Apele everyday undies is that our product doesn’t contain odor-wicking properties. Not only does this give you an accurate sense of what is going on down there, but it also keeps harsh odor-masking chemicals away from the most sensitive areas of your body!

Uterine fibroids are growths on the uterus that are often associated with spotting between periods, heavy or longer periods, and even urinary problems. In fact, a great deal of research and development went into Apele undies to not only absorb bleeding but also incontinence, as many of these issues affect the urinary system as well. Fibroids are typically benign and may shrink on their own, however, having a medical professional assess this is best.

Endometriosis is the process by which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus grows outside of the uterus. This can result in irregular bleeding or spotting between periods, as well as other symptoms. About 1 out of every 10 women in the United States is believed to have endometriosis, but many cases go undiagnosed. For that reason, it is best to share concerns with your primary care doctor to ensure that this isn’t just under-reported but also addressed before other symptoms like pelvic pain and cramping, heavy periods, infertility, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, or more occur.

While Apele everyday panties are made to help combat these confidence-busting issues (yes, even backup for diarrhea and heavy flows), we highly recommend discussing any abnormal symptoms with your healthcare professionals.
